ABOUT POPI

The Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) is there to protect our right to privacy by introducing measure to regulate the processing of personal information.

It is a piece of legislation that aims to regulate how people who process personal information must keep, handle, and secure such sensitive information. It was enacted in South Africa and wants to hold those who mishandle this information accountable.

Anyone dealing with personal information needs to comply.

Accreditation

Certification of successful completion of this training course is endorsed by Benchmark Assessment Agency (BAA), an independent assessment body. The certification assessment is online and produces a uniquely numbered certificate of successful completion. An added benifit is that the programme offers a Mozilla Open Badge (www.openbadges.org) to each successful candidate.

Who Needs this Training?

While it is important for any employees who process personal information to understand the POPI Act, it is particularly important that all managers and superivisory employees should be trained to understand the act, and also maintain and then assess awareness on an ongoing basis. By completing ongoing annual assessments, both staff and employer are fulfilling their obligations. Even with this law in place, at the end of the day it is your responsibility to take care when giving out your information. If you freely share this information on other websites, you cannot just simply assume your information got out from some institution rather than from your own social media accounts. The law can only do so much if you are not careful to protect yourself. You should inform yourself of the law in order to keep yourself protected and help you completely understand your rights. If you are an institution that handles this information, you should also read the law to ensure that you understand it and how to stay on the right side of it. Ignorance of the law will not excuse you of guilt.

POPI - know my rights

All of us have new rights under the POPI Act - the right of a "Data Subject", the individual about whom personal information is being processed. It answers the questions "What are my rights when it comes to my personal information?" and "What can I do if I think I have been treated unfairly in terms of the POPI Act"? Media Works in partnership with IACT-Africa have created a short video, which explains these rights as a free community service.

Training

With these aspects in mind Media Works, a leading adult education and training company, in collaboration with IACT-Africa, is now offering POPI training - POPIWorks: Privacy in Action - through the iTut online learning platform. This online campus allows people to access the material anywhere, any time on PCs, cell-phones and tablets in a collaborative, secure environment. The course material is developed in HTML5 and is SCORM compliant - it can be installed in-house on a SCORM compliant Lerner Management System. The material includes best practice and practical examples, all of which is presented in an interesting, engaging, easy to comprehend manner. The course is made up of five modules, each of which contribute to a clear understanding of why the POPI Act is important and what must be done by organisations and individuals to make sure they are complying with the Act.

The modules include:

  • Introduction to the POPI Act
  • What is POPI all about?
  • Background to POPI
  • POPI and Legislation
  • What can I do? (in relation to the implementation of the Act)

Once the learner has completed the five modules (which takes approximately one hour), they can complete the online Summative Assessment.

The assessment will cover the following areas:

A compulsory pass rate of 80% is required and once the learner has achieved this, the process produces a uniquely numbered certificate of successful completion. This certification is endorsed by Benchmark Assessment Agency, an independent assessment body. An added benefit is that the programme offers a Mozilla Open Badge (www.openbadges.org) to each successful candidate.

The POPI Act is clear in that all employees must be made aware of the provisions of the Act as far as it impacts on how they process personal information. All management and supervisory employees need to receive awareness training. Media Works designed the POPI Act training course so that you can not only create initial awareness, but importantly, as required in the Act, maintain and then assess awareness on an ongoing basis. By completing ongoing annual assessments, both staff and employer are fulfilling their legal obligations.
